Emergency Preparedness Week takes place May 4 to 10, 2025 across the country. The theme for this year is “Plan for every season”. This theme reflects the unique challenges facing Ontario on a seasonal basis, and the opportunities to practice emergency preparedness throughout the year.
The South East Health Unit (SEHU, formerly Hastings Prince Edward Public Health) works with local municipalities, counties and government agencies to help reduce the impact of emergencies and disasters on our residents.
Be prepared and know the risks. Everyone is encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and the possible risks. Consider what you can do to prepare yourself and your family (including pets) before an emergency occurs.
Climate change has affected our weather to the point where it is more common every year to see extreme weather events such as severe storms that can develop quickly, flooding and air quality events like wildfires. These weather events can cause power outages, delays in delivery of supplies (including food and medication) and dangerous outdoor and travel conditions. It is important to have an emergency kit that can sustain your family for a minimum of 72 hours to help you through times when services may not be readily available.
When creating your kit, consider sufficient amounts of non-perishable food that can be prepared without cooking, a supply of bottled water, medication, a first aid kit, clothing and blankets. Flashlights, extra batteries and a portable radio will help you to keep in touch with your community. Be aware of where important papers are stored and ensure you can access them quickly if needed. Consider the needs of those who rely on you including children, those with special needs and elderly parents. Have a plan of where you can meet if you get separated, and have a common contact person designated outside of your area so you can let each other know how you are doing.
Check out the Emergency Preparedness page of our website, where you will find emergency specific information, fact sheets and links to emergency preparedness sites to help you be prepared and stay safe. You can also connect with SEHU by calling 613-966-5500 or 1-800-267-2803, ext. 677.
