Media Release: QRTC encourages safe driving with upcoming ‘Safe on 62’ initiative

Distributed on behalf of the Quinte Region Traffic Coalition

Hastings and Prince Edward Counties/July 17, 2023

The Quinte Region Traffic Coalition (QRTC) wants to encourage all drivers to drive safely this summer.

This week, QRTC partners will be working together to monitor the Highway 62 corridor and encourage safe driving behaviours. Last year, during the ‘Safe on 62’ initiative, enforcement partners laid 76 charges. These charges included speeding, Class G1 driver unaccompanied by a qualified passenger, and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle.

The QRTC has been educating the public for years about the dangers and penalties of unsafe driving. Throughout the summer, the partners will continue to work to prevent the “big four” road safety issues that are the main contributors to motor vehicle collision injuries and deaths – distracted driving, alcohol/drug impaired driving, aggressive driving, and lack of seatbelt use.

Vehicle collisions are preventable and we all have a role to play in road safety. As you travel this summer, remember to:

  • Plan ahead for a safe ride home if you intend to use substances.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Put your phone/device away and out of reach while driving.
  • Follow the posted speed limits.
